Mary Ann (Welch) Porter of Lakewood, Colorado, age 92, passed away while surrounded by her family on September 30, 2019 at The Collier Hospice at Lutheran Medical Center in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. Mary had suffered from prolonged illness. Mary was born to Arthur and Clara Welch of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin on May 25, 1927. She grew up in Wauwatosa but spent happy childhood summers on her parents’ small farm on Wind Lake, Wisconsin. Mary, a.k.a. “Nobby” as she was called by her father, helped him raise hunting dogs. Mary graduated from Trinity College in Washington D.C. in 1948, and went enthusiastically into the working world after a vacation with friends in post-WWII Europe. Mary and her traveling companions once kept themselves awake all night by dancing on the steps of Notre Dame while waiting for Paris’ bakeries to open. Despite being asked by her father not to do so, Mary later did post-graduate study at Berkeley. Mary moved to Denver, Colorado and was taught to ski in the early alpine ski areas by former soldiers of the US Army’s 10th Mountain Division. In Denver, Mary found that she shared common interests in skiing and other outdoor activities with Vance Benge Porter of Bay City, Texas. Vance and Mary were married in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on December 27, 1955. Their 5 children were born in 5 separate cities in Texas, Louisiana, and Connecticut because Vance was transferred every 2 years or so while working for oil companies. The family finally settled permanently in Lakewood, Colorado, where Vance and Mary spent many happy years and eventually retired. Mary was a Colorado-based Director, Board Member and Sales Representative of Prime Leather Finishes of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Mary was a member of St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Lakewood.

Mary was preceded in death by Vance, who passed away in Lakewood on July 15, 1998, and her brothers Robert F. Welch and Arthur T. Welch. She is survived by her sisters-in-law Bobbie LeMay Gaspard of Bay City, Texas, and Juliette Marie Welch of Dousman, Wisconsin. She is also survived by her children Vance Timothy Porter of Snohomish, Washington, Dr. Robert Patrick Porter of Wolfforth, Texas, Maureen Rose (Porter) Wood of Lakewood, Colorado, Andrew John Porter of Phoenix, Arizona, John Benge Porter of Evergreen, Colorado, and many dear nieces and nephews. Her grandchildren and step grandchildren include Tamra Maureen (Wood) Gillette of Riverton, Wyoming, Dr. Elizabeth Lynne Wood of Aurora, Colorado, Mark Christopher Wood of Lakewood, Colorado, Julianne Rose Wood of Lakewood, Colorado, Matthew Thomas Wier of Bothell, Washington, and David Michael Wier of Renton, Washington. She is also survived by 8 great grandchildren.

Mary was wise, gracious, kind, apt to poke fun at herself, generous, and profoundly loved. She is, and will be greatly missed.
